Ask the Doctors
By Drs. Jeff, Craig and Marissa

Question: "I'm a very busy person, and I find it very difficult to prepare myself healthy snacks for the day. Do you have any recommendations?"

Answer: We know it's a busy time with work, family and a new year, but it's very important not to slip into the convenience food mode (ie - toxic, fast foods and empty calorie snacks.) Here are some healthy alternatives:

  1. Get nuts about nuts! Any form of raw, unsalted nuts, for example, almonds, walnuts, pecans, even trail mix with cranberries is great.

  2. Get serious with seeds! Try a handful of sunflower or pumpkin.

  3. Go yo-yo, over yogurt. Organic, non-sweetened yogurt…remember "non fat" means double the sugar.

  4. Have fun with fruit: Berries are the best, melons and grapes are great.

  5. Go green. Cut up your favorite veggies in a medley, and bring along your dressing of choice.

  6. Blast your energy with a bar. Pick your favorite high fiber, low sugar, protein bar.

  7. Try an apple or pear with a stick of cheese.

  8. Get healthy protein from hard boiled eggs.

  9. Start with a smoothie. A protein-berry smoothie is a great way to start the day.

  10. Always, always, always go with water. The average person drinks 2 glasses of water a day when in reality we should have 8!
