Featured Article: Maximizing Your Workout
By Tammy Bartlett
Sometimes
our staff gets asked the question, "I feel
as though the workout is not hard enough!" And we say
"IMPOSSIBLE!" As
many of you already know, the principles behind hydraulic machines
are "what you put in is what you get out." In other
words, if you are feeling as though your workout is not tough
anymore, that means one of two things. One, you are not pushing
hard enough or two, through previous workouts, you have built
more strength and therefore what used to push you isn't
pushing you anymore... Congratulations, push harder!
Curves tested their workout on NFL team members, requesting
them to perform maximum reps at maximum speed. After trying
the equipment, not only did they say it was one of the hardest
workouts they have ever tried, they were amazed on how the
program accomplished a full-body strength training workout
while simultaneously accomplishing a cardiovascular workout
all in just 30 minutes! Hey, if it is tough enough for NFL
players, it must be tough enough for you.
If you are still wondering how to maximize your curves workout,
remember these tips:
- The goal on the machines is to complete as many FULL RANGE
repetitions as fast as you can while still maintaining
your target heart rate. The more muscle you activate, the
more you raise your metabolism and therefore, the more fat
you melt away throughout the day! Please read "Ask
the Doctors" to
find out why it is essential to maintain your target heart
rate to maximize your results.
- If you are wondering
what the maximum repetitions are for each machine, just
ask and one of our team members can provide you with that.
- And if
that's not enough, we are so committed to
making your workout as hard as you can imagine that we
have put aside time for one-on-one consultation on a per
request basis. Just ask for one of our “personal
coaching sessions" and one
of our staff will be glad to set you up although now
that you have been warned...BE PREPARED!

Ask
the Doctors
Question: Why is it important to maintain a target heart rate
during exercise?
Answer: This is an important question because
maximizing you target heart rate and training level will maximize
your results in weight loss and/or health! The great thing
about Curves is we've made it really easy for you to
figure out your particular target heart rate (THR) through
the simple chart on the wall. The chart will help you determine
how to measure your target heart rate based on your age.
But before we determine your target heart rate (THR) it's
important to understand that if you are just beginning an
exercise regimen and have a health problem you should work
at the lower level (50 percent). For those of you who are healthy
but new to the exercise program, we'll have you exercise
at 60%-70%. Of course, if you've been at Curves for longer
then 6 months and have been working out consistently, it's
probably time to move up to 70%-80%. Now you are probably
asking: "Why
do I need to keep my heart rate between these zones?" Science
and research has found that the human body burns different
types of fuel at different activity levels. For instance,
a sprinter will burn basically GLYCOGEN which is stored
glucose as he/she is working in the 90% (THR) or also termed
ANAEROBIC. On the other hand, if you are working out AEROBICALLY
(60-70%-THR) you will be burning FAT as the predominant
fuel.
To summarize, if your heart rate climbs too high
(90% THR) and you are gasping for air, then you will
be burning glycogen instead of fat. This will not allow you
to achieve the results that you came to Curves for. So pay
attention to your heart rate--it is extremely useful tool
during the Curves workout.
We hope this has answered
your question and keep up the good work at Curves. We
are proud of you!!!

News: What Do I Eat On the Curves Program?
By Dr. Jeff Bartlett
What
should I eat on the Curves program? This is by far the most
common question that gets asked to our staff! And so it should
be. So often we hear about someone who has been working out
for 3 months and hasn't lost inches, only to find out that
they have been eating carbs, carbs, carbs! So why is it that
carbs are getting the bad wrap? It is, because of the simple
fact that carbs turn to fat! As soon as sugar enters the blosod
stream, the chemical insulin is released to reduce your body's
blood sugar. Unfortunately, insulin is a fat storage chemical
and given enough time, insulin will turn that bread, rice,
pasta and potatoes into fat and store it in those unwanted
places.
So if you want to maximize your results by loosing more inches
and weight, we have to push away the carbs. Does that mean
all Carbs? No, just the simple or refined carbs like breads,
pastas, potatoes, rice, sugar, popcorn, sugary fruits, and
juices high in fructose. The very best source of carbs is vegetables
high in fiber, fruits that end in berry (raspberry, strawberry,
blackberry, cranberry etc).
If you are ready to take action and are running out of options
on food we have to solution. We are excited to announce that
our team has recently opened a Low Carb Superstore located
on the backside of Westgate Mall. The store was triggered by
such an alarming request from all of our Curves members for
a low carb grocery store. It opened in April and is now ready
to serve the public especially all Curves members. It is essentially
a grocery store offering all your favorite foods in a low sugar
formula!

We feel it is a big step in reducing the amount of
sugars our society consumes and will work synergistically
with the recommendations from the Curves workbook. Please come
in to see our store and try one of our many free samples. Remember
to bring your Curves workout tag because we are giving a
5% discount that is exclusive to Curves members only.
So remember, if you are not progressing as quickly as you
would like from your results at Curves, look at the amount
of carbs you are eating daily. We personally guarantee if you
reduce the simple carbs and sugars out of your diet and choose
foods that have a reduced sugar formula, you will reach your
goals quicker than you ever have imagined!
