The
Great Exchange
Happy New Year! We want to take a moment to applaud all of
you for the commitment you made to your health in 2005. The
greatest way to predict your future is to create it!
In
other words, the best way to ensure lifelong health and vitality
is to practice good habits now. As we enter into 2006, most
people are thinking about making the traditional “New
Year’s Resolutions”. Unfortunately, statistics
show that only 5% of these resolutions are actually kept.
We want to encourage you to try something a little different
this year… it’s called “The Great Exchange”.
Spend some time to identify 4 habits that are limiting you
or preventing you from being at your best. Then exchange them
(one per quarter) for positive, healthy habits that will contribute
to your success, both physically and mentally.
Here are some great ideas to get you started:
- Try swapping your morning coffee for a powdered greens
drink.
- Instead of soda, try drinking water.
- Exchange your breakfast donut for a healthy smoothie.
- Rather than watching an hour of TV every night, commit
to 60 minutes of reading.
- Break that holiday habit of sleeping in late, and use
those extra 30 minutes to start your day with a Curves workout!
Imagine the changes that you can create in your life by “exchanging”
just 4 habits per year. If you implement this system for 5
years, you will have created 20 new, positive habits.
In this edition, we’ve included a wonderful Curves
success story to provide you with some inspiration for 2006.
We’ve also provided a tasty and healthy recipe to get
you on track with your nutrition. Here’s to your best
year yet!
Wishing you health and success,
Your CurvesHealthClub team

Story
"Making a Lifestyle Change"
When I developed high blood pressure, and the
initial stages of diabetes, I knew I had to do something.
I knew that eating right and exercising was the way to lose
weight and I would need to make a lifestyle change to maintain
it.
When
I walked in to Curves, I instantly felt at home,
like I was with family. This was definitely not the normal
“standoffish” feeling you get at other gyms. Regular
gyms intimidated me because I did not know what to do, or
how to use the machines. There was no need for those fears
here. It’s a simple workout. My first time here, the
staff showed me how to use each machine, and explained which
muscles you are working. If I ever have a question or concern,
there is always someone right there to answer it for me.
I still love food, but now I really try to watch what I eat.
I make coming to Curves a priority. I value my time
here, where I get to do something just for myself, and I feel
so much better afterwards! I now sleep better at night, and
many of my aches and pains are gone. I just got the best news
from my doctor; I will be able to stop taking my blood pressure
medication very soon.
I can’t say enough about what Curves has done
for me. I recommend it to everyone. When people ask what I
am doing to lose weight, I tell them about Curves.
I have finally found a fun way to exercise. I love coming
here and working out. I am so glad that Curves is
in my life.

Recipe
of the Month
Coconut Chicken Salad
2 tablespoons finely chopped lemon grass
3 tablespoons lime juice
1 teaspoon palm or brown sugar
1 cup coconut milk
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 chicken breast fillets
1 bunch mint
¼ fresh coconut, flesh shaved and toasted
100g snow pea sprouts
2 Lebanese (small) cucumbers, finely sliced
2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted
Lime wedges
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. To make the dressing,
combine the lemon grass, 2 tablespoons of lime juice, the
palm sugar and coconut milk in a saucepan over low heat. Simmer
for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure that the sugar
has dissolved, then remove from heat and allow to cool.
Put the sesame oil and 1 tablespoon of lime juice into a
small bowl. Add the chicken breasts and toss them in the oil
and juice before putting them in a baking dish. Drizzle the
chicken with the remaining marinade, cover with foil and bake
in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the chicken and allow it
to cool completely. Roughly shred the chicken and add it to
the bowl with the dressing. Add the remaining salad ingredients
and toss everything together with the sesame seeds. Serve
with a wedge of lime. Serves 4.
